The Abortion Debate at Centre College

by Leigh Wingfeld

In early November, Centre Students for Life hosted a pro-life table in Cowan to share information on the dangers of and alternative options to abortion. Amery Galon, the President of the Students for Life club at Centre, shared in an interview that their organization has two primary goals: to provide information on some of the dangers of abortion, and to support expecting and new mothers. Some examples of what this club may organize are abortion protest groups, baby supplies drives, and fundraising events for pro-life organizations.

Amery emphasized that their organization wants what’s best for both the mother and the child. This organization believes that by supporting mothers through pregnancy and early motherhood, more women are likely to carry to term. Amery also shared that she wanted students to think more critically of these issues, and question what their stance is on the issue, despite political lines. Centre Students for Life held a similar table the previous year outside of Cowan, in which Cento covered concerns over mis-information concerns, check out the article “Anti-Planned Parenthood Booth Appears Outside Cowan” by Jenna Nicodemus on the Cento website.

On the other side of the issue, there is Centre Students for Reproductive Justice which focuses on issues such as rights to reproductive healthcare and sexual education. This organization hosts events such as “Sex Ed After Dark”, which was a collaboration with Centre Health promotions to keep students on campus educated about their health. They also host events like “Creepin’ it Consensual” which was a Halloween event centered around consent education. Both organizations are very active on campus and regularly host events. Make sure to look out for upcoming events and stay engaged on campus.
