Abe, is it true that housing gets better with more seniority? Which housing is best? Just not sure what I can look forward to.
In general, yes, the housing does get “better” with more seniority. The problem with this generalization is that the quality of the housing options is very dependent on the kind of living style you want to have. If you want to have a room with a few friends and a shared restroom, then the Pearl suites are probably the best option for you. If you want to feel like you are living in a community of people, then the Northside pods, which can house up to eight members of a housing group, might be the style which you prefer. If what you are looking for is an apartment-style house, holding up to five people with a shared kitchenette and common room, then Brockman commons is the area you are looking for. Every dorm, excluding Cheek/Evans, has some quality which people appreciate. Even the decrepit Ruby Cheek House allows for community bonding and has full kitchens. Some people, like me, prefer to live closer to the heart of campus. For those who want this nearness, but cannot stand on a pedestal for 24 hours a day, old quad dorms are the way to go.
Given this variety in what you might be looking for in a dorm, it would make sense that housing gets better as you get more seniority. The reason for this is that as you get more seniority you are able to pick the dorm you would consider to be the best. A higher lottery slot means a better chance of getting into the living situation that you would prefer, thus the best housing for you.
What are your summer plans?
This summer I plan on joining the HUM 229 course in Tahiti! I have heard wonderful things about Dr. Wood and have always wanted to go to a tropical location. It has been a while since I have left my pedestal, and I hope to take this opportunity to get some sun. I also have not tried yoga in a while, and last time I tried it, it took a while to put me back together, so I hope that this time it goes a bit better. After I go on this Summer Term course, I plan on returning to Centre to continue the part-time modelling gig that I have been doing for the past thirteen years. You have probably seen some of my work: it is on all of the promotional materials, after all.
That’s all of my plans for this summer. I hope that you, and anyone else reading this column, have an amazing summer! Whether you are working a job, doing an internship, researching something cool, or just relaxing away from the classroom, it should be wonderful. I will see you this fall and I look forward to your wonderful, fun, and challenging questions. Until then, I bid adieu!
