Centre Announces Another New Study Abroad!

by Hallie Gleeson

The staff of Centre Global are happy to announce the unveiling of another study abroad semester-away experience for students! After months of negotiations and international treaties spearheaded by the vast network of Centre’s alumni, the arrangements have been finalized.

Now presenting “Stars, Sand, and Struggle: The Interplay of Egypt and Sudan,” a DLM 310 and E2 course!

Bir Tawil is nestled between the borders of Egypt and Sudan, and is claimed by neither country. Each insists that the quadrilateral sliver of land belongs to the other nation. Officially, there are no inhabitants, though local tribes do use the land.

Students that chose to apply to the Bir Tawil location will have their pick of wind-weathered rocks to sleep on, with a limited opportunity to have a small cloth tent for an additional fee. Because of the delicate nature of the program, please note that students will be asked to waive more rights than in a standard study abroad agreement.

At Bir Tawil, students will have the opportunity to learn about global politics in a deeply intimate way. Under the guidance of Centre professors and the rogue wanderer inhabitants of the doubly-unclaimed landmass, students will gain both an increased understanding of international boundaries and an appreciation for the interplay between sovereignty of nations.

Throughout history, there have been various attempts to lay claim to the land. This program will be jointly headed by the international studies department and the history department, with special consultation from Bear Grylls to ensure student safety.

Please note that there are scholarships available to any student able to submit proof of oil deposits in Bir Tawil.
