Welcome to the first installment in a recurring column in which me and other writers cover both classic Danville locations or give you an overview of a newer institution. The first location to be featured is the new Waffle Stop Cafe! Located in a second floor storefront just off of main street, this waffle themed restaurant is a newcomer to the neighborhood, having just been established last summer. Although it might look small on the outside, the interior extends back farther than you might think, providing plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.
When I entered I was immediately struck both by the cozy decorations and by the sheer number of menu options. You might think that the possibilities would be limited for a shop which specialized only in a single type of breakfast food, but you would be mistaken. With options ranging from a peach cobbler waffle to an egg stuffed biscuit waffle, the menu is packed with sweet and savory options. If you find yourself dissatisfied with any of their twenty plus signature options, you can always create your own waffle: when I went I built a classic waffle topped with strawberry preserves, blueberry preserves, and lemon curd. The price, one of the most important qualities of a restaurant for college students, ranges from $9.50 for the majority of their simple topped waffles to $12.50 for a more specialty or exotic offering, such as the Thai themed peanut waffle. They also have an offer open to Centre college students where they get a free waffle after their ninth waffle purchase.
The only major criticism I might have with this new addition to the culinary roster in this town would be the wait times, admittedly we arrived in the middle of Sunday brunch, a busy time regardless of the restaurant, but we found ourselves waiting upwards of thirty minutes to receive our food. This is not meant to be a major critique, however, given that they did warn us of the wait when we arrived and, at the end of the day, any other sit down restaurant in the area would have had a similar wait time. Regardless of this one flaw in our experience, I won’t hesitate to claim that Waffle Stop Cafe has the potential to be a new Danville favorite, though probably not on the level of Burkes or Dry Stack, but a valuable option nonetheless.
