Well well well, would you look at that? I’m back in business. The Cento’s ever-so-kind Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor decided to pay me a visit in my prison cell and pay my bail so I could, quote, “dangle keys in front of our bored readers.” Whatever that means. I mean, y’all have attention spans, right? The kind that last more than three seconds? Okay, good. I have to repay my debts, after all. I’ve learned that much from my experiences with the mafia.
Hah, well… no amount of serving time could beat the need to infodump onto an unwilling audience out of me. That’s right. I see all the social cues—I know people don’t like me—and I literally don’t care.
Today, I will be talking to you about anime. Yes, Japanese animated shows.
We just established that I don’t care about social cues, after all. No, I don’t go outside.
Did you know…
…that the longest-running anime ever is a television show called Sazae-san, and has over 2,000 episodes, with 55 years of being on-air?
…that the manga authors of Hunter X Hunter and Sailor Moon are married?
…that one of the most popular animes of all time, Death Note, is banned in China due to superstitions about gods of death? Please don’t write your teacher’s name in a book and inform them they’re going to die, kids.
…that the portrayal of titans in Attack On Titan comes from the manga author once encountering drunk customers at a cafe? Average Centre student activity, really.
…that some Japanese animators are able to animate entire episodes on their own, such as Ryosuke Nishii animating episode 10 of Your Lie in April by himself? Honestly, also an average Centre student activity.
…that, at times, Studio Ghibli’s speed of production has been 1 minute per month, due to the amount of painstaking, hand-drawn details? Jinkies.
…that a lot of the pirate characters in One Piece are based off real pirates, such as Edward Teach (i.e., Blackbeard)?
…that one of the earliest animes that has survived into modern history is The Dull Sword (Namakura Gatana), a short released in 1917? Very vintage.
…that the style of anime was greatly inspired by Disney’s hand-drawn animation in the 1970s, and vice versa? I love copying my neighbor’s work.
That’s all for now. Hope you enjoyed the facts, because I am currently being dragged off to a padded cell. Already. Again. What the hell, man.
