Some upperclassmen report that during their freshman and sophomore years there was little to no AI usage by both admin at Centre and businesses within Danville, but now it seems like “AI is everywhere.”

Assuming a significant portion of Danville’s population is against Artificial Intelligence, why are small businesses turning toward AI fully understanding the risk of backlash? AI generated media, as opposed to human made media, obviously saves small businesses a significant amount of money. A survey conducted through Meta found that its business-users are seeing an average return of $4.25 for every $1 spent with AI-powered advertising tools. Small businesses are the foundation of Danville. Therefore, it’s not necessarily that Danville is “Pro-AI,” it’s that Danville’s foundation in small businesses creates an environment highly prone to its alluring economical benefits.

However, I lived around small towns myself. I can confidently report that there is not nearly as much AI usage where I am from. The freshmen students I have spoken with share similar thoughts.

I am from Conway, Arkansas, which is surrounded by small towns such as Morrilton, Vilonia, Mayflower, and Greenbrier, all of which have populations of fewer than 7,000 people. In those communities, I find that when a business is struggling with designing its marketing, owners often reach out to art students at nearby colleges or even high schools for help. Students are usually willing to take on these projects because they provide valuable real-world experience or allow them to build their portfolios. Personally, I have designed logos and flyers for businesses before.

I am extremely disappointed with the amount of AI generated content throughout Danville. In my opinion, it tells me that a business is not only lazy, but that it doesn’t prioritize catering to and supporting its potential customers. Do these businesses know that they are sitting right next to a college known for the arts?

Personally, I will not support a business if its advertisements and materials are AI-nfested.

By Addie Choate From menus to designs, logos to signs, Danville is plagued by what can only be referred to as an “AI Infestation.” Both local businesses and nationally recognized corporations are boldly displaying AI generated media to its Danville consumers.
