I know that at Centre we can’t always avoid tough schedules. But you’re strong, and you’ll manage it—by yourself or with a team.

As for my main advice, I would recommend having some sort of planner. Lots of work means lots of moving parts to keep track of, and having to go back and correct one item you forgot about will make you more stressed than you already are. Whether it’s online and sends you reminders, or paper where you check it daily, have a planner for your due dates and assignments.

Additionally, Find time to relax. If it’s midnight and you have an early class, it might be better for you to rest and be ready for the day than it will be for you to stay and do more work. Your health is what counts. I know that’s rich coming from a statue who never moves, but I see you walking in and out of the library in the early mornings: you need some sleep!

Very importantly, ask for help. I see Centre’s peer mentors, tutors, professors, and CLC staff entering the library every day wanting to help students who need it. I know it’s cliche—they’ve been saying it since I was president—but the hardest part is asking for help. Try it, even if it’s scary. I think you’ll find it helps

And my biggest advice? Cry a bit. I struggle to cry—being metal makes it difficult—but my friend the Flame is always upset and needs to rant a bit before feeling better. I think everyone needs that, statue and student alike. Life is hard, that’s the truth.

Of course, should all else fail, never forget to drop a penny on my foot. I’ll bring you all my well wishes and blessings of good luck!

What should I do this summer?

I’m an advocate for working, whether in research, internships, or just a summer job. In research, you can gain real-world experience while also learning what you actually like working in (important for Centre’s dear STEM students). Internships are a tried-and-true way of gaining experience (and our Center for Career and Professional Development is always happy to help). And, of course, regular work for money is never something to scoff at. That’s important (I collect all my pennies and invest them at the end of exam season)

How do I find the Shane to my Ilya?

Well, I’m sorry to say, but if you’re Illya, you may have to work on your lack of emotional availability—you have to be able to have vulnerable conversations in a relationship. That, and you may have to subject yourself to a 10-year-long starship (which, while I enjoyed watching Heated Rivalry with the Flame, I have to say does not sound ideal).

But, if you have your heart set on this, you need to join a club or sport and find someone to be your rival—then your dreams will really come true.

Oh, and, of course, learn Russian!

How do you Manage a Heavy Course Load?
