{"id":915,"date":"2014-05-03T06:42:00","date_gmt":"2014-05-03T06:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cento.centre.edu\/?p=915"},"modified":"2014-05-03T06:42:00","modified_gmt":"2014-05-03T06:42:00","slug":"byoblanket-music-festival-unites-campus-musicians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cento.centre.edu\/index.php\/2014\/05\/03\/byoblanket-music-festival-unites-campus-musicians\/","title":{"rendered":"BYOBlanket music festival unites campus musicians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By AUDREY JENKINS<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<em>STAFF WRITER<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On Fri., May 2, Centre Encore will be hosting the BYOBlanket music festival outside of the Campus Center.<\/p>\n<p>Centre Encore is Centre\u2019s very own music society, which was recently revived by sophomore Sue Choi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis past August was Centre Encore\u2019s first birthday,\u201d Choi said. \u201cWe have been officially running for over a year now after a couple of years of inactivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of Centre Encore\u2019s main goals is to connect campus musicians with opportunities both on campus and in the greater Danville area. Both are officers in Centre Encore and perform in the band.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBYOBlanket is an ambitious and friendly lawn festival for Centre musicians and performers to show off what they can do,\u201d Choi said. \u201cOriginal songs, favorite songs, original choreography, favorite dance moves are all encouraged for performers and audience alike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Centre Encore hosted the event last year but was forced to bring the event inside due to rain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ended up hosting it in the Warehouse,\u201d Choi said. \u201cEven though we had a small audience, we all had a great time \u2013 and people even brought blankets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taking place on the lawn outside of the Campus Center this year, the festival encourages students to \u201cbring their own blankets\u201d and dinner, sit outside, and jam alongside their friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very relaxed environment,\u201d Choi said. \u201cWe want everyone to hang out with each other on the lawn while the event is happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Performers at this year\u2019s BYOBlanket festival include Moments in Motion, Nicholas Teale, Every Weird Thing!, Alan Secor, and Mus Musculus.<\/p>\n<p>Mus Musculus, a student-led ska band, performed at the festival\u2019s previous reincarnation last spring and have since opened both of Phi Kappa Tau\u2019s \u201cAir Guitar\u201d parties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe play several different genres now from blues to pop to rock,\u201d junior Michael Yu, the band\u2019s guitarist, said. \u201cThis range of genres speaks to the musicianship that our band consists of. We have three music majors and the rest have an extensive background in music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The band is currently working on recording their first album with the help of Associate Professor of Music Nathan Link.<\/p>\n<p>Junior Ali Gautier and her Pearl suitemates formed their band Every Weird Thing! after Centre Encore\u2019s Battle of the Bands last semester.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all love and are involved in music in some way, it\u2019s kind of like a fifth roommate,\u201d Gautier said. \u201cAfter the Battle of the Bands last semester, we realized that we could have put a band together and competed and were disappointed that we missed out, but then we were approached with this opportunity so we jumped in head first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every Weird Thing! will be performing covers of \u201cPompeii\u201d by Bastille, \u201cA Thousand Miles\u201d by Vanessa Carlton, and \u201cMy Old Kentucky Home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the festival, all students will come back onstage to lead a group performance of \u201cCentre Dear\u201d to give the performance a \u201cCentre meaning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Choi hopes that through the BYOBlanket festival, Centre will become a more \u201cmusic-friendly\u201d campus where students can meet up with another and perform. She, along with Centre Encore\u2019s other officers, are launching a Facebook group in the fall where any student can ask for musicians to join or host impromptu jam sessions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re hoping to increase exposure so that people are more familiar with Centre Encore and we can become a resource for everyone on campus,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>BYOBlanket will take place on Fri., May 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. outside of the Campus Center.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By AUDREY JENKINS &#8211;\u00a0STAFF WRITER On Fri., May 2, Centre Encore will be hosting the BYOBlanket music festival outside of the Campus Center.
