Just this last week the Center Global announced the newest location to our study abroad roster, Centre-in-Antarctica! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cStudents will get a first hand experience with the effects of climate change on the polar ecosystem in a truly new way,\u201d says a press release on the Centre Global website. They went on to say that they \u201care proud to now have an established study abroad program in every continent.\u201d The Fall 2026 course will consist of an eight week extreme weather camping experience during which students will get hands on and up close with Antarctic life, followed by eight weeks recovering at the Amundsen-Scott research base. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Students in the program will have to take DLM 310 \u201cAntarctic Survival: Teambuilding in Extreme Conditions\u201d taught by Dr. Roush. For their other two courses students can choose one of either ENS 231 (E3) \u201cField Sampling Methods,\u201d BIO 371 \u201cPolar Ecology,\u201d or ANT 228 (E2) \u201cCulture Through Suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When we reached out to Adam Chen-Dedman regarding the process of arranging this new opportunity, he told us to \u201cget out of his house\u201d and that \u201che no longer works here.\u201d Given this response from Centre Global we decided to interview students on the street regarding their opinions of the program. One prospective Economics major, cornered while waiting in line for their Billie\u2019s order, said that they are \u201cconsidering going to cover their E1 and E3 credit\u201d and explained that they would \u201cget some professional attire tips from penguins.\u201d A senior who we asked said that they \u201cwished this was an option earlier, I would have loved to go to Antarctica. That would have been so much better than my trip to Strasbourg.\u201d A few other students we asked declined to have their comments recorded, although the general consensus was that the program would be a welcome part of Centre Global\u2019s offerings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Altogether, it seems like this is a positive development for the students of Centre College. We look forward to hearing the stories, and seeing the frostbitten limbs, of those who go on this new adventure!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
