Odds are you\u2019ve heard of Shakespeare. He is a rather famous Elizabethan poet and playwright, and people generally associate his work with thee<\/em>\u2019s and thou\u2019<\/em>s and poofy pants with tights underneath. But if you go to Centre\u2019s production of Twelfth Night<\/em>, you won\u2019t see a typical performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comedy involves cross-dressing, miscommunication, and mistaken identity. When Viola and her twin brother Sebastian are shipwrecked, the play hits the ground running with baffling love triangles and Shakespeare\u2019s notorious word-play and wit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twelfth Night<\/em> is Professor Jennifer Goff\u2019s directorial debut as a drama professor at Centre College. Directing a play as well known as Shakespeare\u2019s seems stressful, but Goff has had a semester to adjust to teaching and working here at Centre, and is excited about this performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe play will get a little extra attention, and people will have opinions,\u201d Dr. Goff said, but this, for her and the cast, is \u201cfun because people will come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the expectations viewers have about Shakespeare\u2019s plays, this is no ordinary production. This year\u2019s production will be set among the cast of a 1920s Vaudeville troop. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, Vaudeville was a flamboyant, exciting form of theatrical entertainment, and Dr. Goff hopes that putting Twelfth Night<\/em> in that setting will \u201cbring the play just a bit closer to us.\u201d \u201cThis is not a documentary about Vaudeville,\u201d Dr. Goff said. \u201cWe let it serve our story.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First year George Adams, playing Sebastian, did not participate in a production last semester. \u201cI wanted to get my bearing here at Centre before I took on such a big time commitment,\u201d Adams explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adams is not the only new cast member. \u201cThe more experienced members of the cast really made an effort to help everyone in the cast become part of the crew,\u201d Adams said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though the setting has changed, Centre\u2019s production keeps the play\u2019s language. \u201cI really like Shakespeare, but the language can be challenging. It makes you have to think about what is being said before you can deliver it properly,\u201d Adams said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Junior Katherine Moeykens, who is playing Sebastian\u2019s twin sister Viola, agreed. \u201cGoing from a play entirely in prose, like Cloud 9<\/em>, to Shakespeare is different,\u201d Moeykens said, \u201cbut I think the whole cast has done a great job adjusting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to learning the intricacies of Shakespeare\u2019s language, the cast had to take a course on how to safely act with a sword. \u201cIt was intense, and I don\u2019t even have a serious sword-fighting scene,\u201d Moeykens said. \u201cIt was a fun and exciting experience, though.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Centre\u2019s newest director has not only facilitated the cast\u2019s coming together as a unit, but she has also made herself a positive member of Centre\u2019s community as a whole. \u201cShe\u2019s meshed into the campus, not just with us, but with other professors and the campus as a whole,\u201d Moeykens said of Dr. Goff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDr. Goff did a good job of listening to our concerns. She really integrated with the cast,\u201d Adams agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Goff is happy with the way the cast has worked to put this production together. \u201cThis group will only be together doing this specific thing this one time, and I think that\u2019s exciting and special,\u201d Goff said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twelfth Night<\/em> runs from Apr. 18 to Apr. 21 at 8 pm in Weisiger Theater. It is a convocation credit, and is free for Centre students. It will cost five dollars for non-Centre students, and ten dollars for non-students.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
