Of my three years as a Centre colonel, I have spent the last two in\u00a0service to our campus through the\u00a0Student Government Association. \u00a0From 2015\u20132016, I represented my fellow sophomores in the House, contributing to the\u00a0efforts of the Student Affairs committee; during the current school year, I’ve\u00a0acted as one of Division I’s delegates in\u00a0the Student Senate. \u00a0Equipped with the experiences, insights, and knowledge that I’ve accumulated the past two years, I am prepared and eager to be your chief academic advocate as President of the Student Senate for\u00a02017\u20132018. \u00a0Under Mason Paas’s leadership this year, the Student Senate has pioneered several initiatives that I would like to continue in Mason’s\u00a0absence, while adding a number of new\u00a0items to the Senate’s agenda.<\/p>\n

This past fall, the Student Senate organized\u00a0the first annual Literacy Gala<\/i>. \u00a0Hosted in the Grace Doherty Library, the gala garnered enthusiastic support and drew\u00a0attendance from both students and\u00a0faculty members, as it\u00a0raised funds to purchase books for Centre’s After-School Program. \u00a0In addition to providing a valuable\u00a0channel for financial contributions, the gala allowed individuals within the Centre community to engage in conversations surrounding this worthy cause. \u00a0Needless to say, this is a\u00a0tradition that I consider to be worth maintaining\u2014a sentiment that I hope you share.<\/p>\n

Another project that the Senate has undertaken this school\u00a0year has involved the Center for Career and Professional Development. \u00a0In collaboration, the Senate and the CCPD have made various attempts to enhance the visibility, accessibility, and\u00a0utility of the office for Centre students. \u00a0Recently, we decided to conduct a raffle, in which students who register for an appointment with a CCPD representative get entered into a drawing for a tablet. \u00a0When the fall semester\u00a0begins, I’d like to continue these kinds of efforts to incentivize students’\u00a0participation in and engagement with\u00a0the CCPD’s wonderful programs and staff.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

My central\u00a0plank\u00a0revolves around the school’s\u00a0exam scheduling. \u00a0In the coming year, I hope to spearhead an effort to reform the existing finals framework to a self-scheduled system. \u00a0Working alongside the senators whom you elect, and gathering the input of faculty members\u00a0and academic administrators, I\u00a0will advocate for an alternative\u00a0that grants you a greater degree of choice, as the Centre student. \u00a0Instead of having to modify your\u00a0study schedule to accommodate the preconfigured\u00a0finals\u00a0layout, you should have the opportunity to distribute your exams in such a way that maximizes your potential to perform well. \u00a0As a caveat, though, understand that\u00a0such a set-up would\u00a0demand from you\u00a0higher levels\u00a0of\u00a0responsibility, accountability, and foresight.\u00a0 Ideally, though, if you were to utilize this freedom wisely, it would only work to your advantage. \u00a0While I cannot guarantee success on this front, know that I will work tirelessly, on your behalf, to achieve reform that better\u00a0serves the administration, faculty, and\u2014most importantly\u2014you, as the exam-taker.<\/p>\n

I highly encourage you\u00a0to attend the upcoming debate, taking place on Tuesday, March 14th, at 8:00 p.m. \u00a0It will certainly be a worthwhile and informative event, as you\u00a0prepare to cast your\u00a0vote on the 15th.<\/span> \u00a0When the polls open, I would be very appreciative of your support, as we strive, collectively, to enhance the academic experience of Centre’s student body.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
