{"id":1592,"date":"2014-11-20T08:00:43","date_gmt":"2014-11-20T13:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cento.centre.edu\/?p=1592"},"modified":"2014-11-20T08:00:43","modified_gmt":"2014-11-20T13:00:43","slug":"cross-country-teams-place-third-at-regionals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cento.centre.edu\/index.php\/2014\/11\/20\/cross-country-teams-place-third-at-regionals\/","title":{"rendered":"Cross Country teams place third at Regionals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By SARAH CORNETT<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; <em><strong>EDITOR-IN-CHIEF<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.centre.edu\/cento\/files\/\/2014\/11\/cc.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1593\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.centre.edu\/cento\/files\/\/2014\/11\/cc.jpg\" alt=\"cc\" width=\"643\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cento.centre.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/cc.jpg 643w, https:\/\/cento.centre.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/cc-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 643px) 100vw, 643px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">The Men and Women\u2019s Cross Country teams placed third in the NCAA South\/Southeast Regional meet in Mount Berry, G.A on Nov. 15.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">While overall the teams finished in third place several runners stole the spotlight by earning an invitation to to the National meet on Nov. 22 in Mason, O.H.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">For the Men\u2019s team, junior Victor Pataky will continue on after winning third place on the 8K course out of the 200 other runners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">For the Women\u2019s team, sophomore Serena Gale-Butto and senior Ashley El Rady have been invited to compete in the National meet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">Gale-Butto completed the 6K course in about 22 minutes and 21 seconds to finish fifth overall. El Rady finished sixth with a time of 23 minutes and 16 seconds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">All three individuals worked hard to earn these coveted spots, and plan to continue working hard for the National meet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">\u201cI have made three goals,\u201d Pataky said. \u201cThe first is to break our 8K school record, weather and conditions permitting. The second is to be in the top 50. And my last, is to be in the top 35, which would give me All-American honors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">Gale-Butto said, \u201cFor the NCAA I have a few goals. When we raced on the course in Mason, O.H. for the pre-national competition, I could tell it was one of the fastest courses I\u2019ve ever run on. I\u2019m hoping to [set a personal record] on the course, and gain experience racing at the National level.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">During the Regional meet, the Women\u2019s team earned a total of 125 points with seniors Hannah Ellis, Cristin Palmer, and Emily Akin completing their runs in impressive times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">Additionally for the Men\u2019s team, the group earned 110 points with seniors Eric Beyerle, Josh Rieskamp, and Matthew McCurdy and junior Glen Bortolus leading the team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">For many of the players, the teams\u2019 successes can be credited to the coaches and the group\u2019s sense of unity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">\u201cCoach Owens is one of the best goal-setters there is. She never settles for \u2018good enough,\u2019 and wants to help everyone to reach their full potential,\u201d\u00a0 Gale-Butto said. \u201cCoach Hagans is the best person to go to for strategy and split analysis. Together they make a great coaching team.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">Pataky echoed Gale-Butto sentiments and also heavily credited his teammates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">\u00a0\u201cCoach Owens is a key factor in making me a better runner, teammate, and person. She is a great mentor who is willing to give advice on anything,\u201d Pataky said. \u201cThe team is also a huge factor in making me a successful runner. Without them, I wouldn\u2019t have much purpose for running.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">Although for many the season ended too soon, overall the team feels a sense of pride over their accomplishments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">\u201cI felt great about this season. This is the best team I\u2019ve ever raced with, and it\u2019s been a privilege to have one last season with the senior girls on the team. They\u2019re great teammates, mentors, and friends,\u201d Gale-Butto said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">Pataky agreed with Gale-Butto and said, \u201cIn terms of how the team did, I think it was a good season. Although it ended sooner than we wanted it to, I feel like we overcame obstacles in each meet we went to. That really showed how gutsy and scrappy this team was,\u201d Pataky said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_p1\"><span class=\"x_s1\">\u201cI chose to run cross country because of the great team atmosphere we have. It\u2019s so fun and invigorating to be a part of this team.
