Studios recently announced the release of ten new films from the DC comic book universe by 2020. These films will feature a range of superheroes from the ubiquitous Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, to the lesser known Shazam and Cyborg. DC appears to be trying to compete with the success of Marvel\u2019s superhero collaboration blockbuster, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>The Avengers<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, by releasing two <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Justice League<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> films, putting multiple DC superheroes into one action-packed film. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Here is a full rundown of what movies to expect in the next five years: <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Batman v. Superman<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">: <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Dawn of Justice<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2016), <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Suicide Squad<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2016), <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Wonder Woman<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2017), <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Justice League Part One<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2017), <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>The Flash<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2018), <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Aquaman <\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(2019),<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i> Shazam<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2019), <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Justice League Part Two <\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(2019), <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Cyborg<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2020), and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Green Lantern<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2020).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This onslaught of superhero movies is DC\u2019s response to Marvel\u2019s \u201cPhase 3\u201d announcement that they would be releasing nine films by 2019, not including <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Avengers: Age of Ultron <\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">and<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i> Ant-Man<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, which come to theaters next July.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Marvel\u2019s movies are brilliantly marketed,\u201d Assistant Professor of English and Director of Film Studies program chair Dr. Stacey Peebles said. \u201cWith something like <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>The Avengers<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, it\u2019s a brilliant franchise. How many spinoffs can you do with that? The franchise could exponentially go on forever.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Marvel\u2019s Phase 3 includes: <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Captain America: Civil War <\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(2016), <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Doctor Strange<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2016), <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Guardians of the Galaxy 2<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2017), <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Thor: Ragnarok<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2017), <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Black Panther<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2017), <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Avengers: Infinity War Part One<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2018), <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Captain Marvel<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2018), <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Inhumans<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2018), and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Avengers: Infinity War Part Two <\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(2019).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">[Marvel\u2019s] success with the Avengers movie has opened a huge market for superhero movies through crossovers and is what sparked <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Batman v. Superman<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> and the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Justice League<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> movie in my opinion,\u201d junior and comic book enthusiast Drew Patterson said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Even so, Dr. Peebles questioned the need for so many superhero films in next five years.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We\u2019ve had superhero movie after superhero movie. I wonder, is this bubble about to burst? But everyone in my [Introduction to Film] class shook their heads and said \u2018no way.\u2019 Particularly with superhero movies, the fan base is so strong that it is sustaining this genre cycle even past the point that you would expect to see it start to flag,\u201d Dr. Peebles said. \u201cNobody\u2019s worried that this is a genre that\u2019s going to go away. That almost seems like a historical exception to me.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Part of the fan base\u2019s devotion stems from a strong sentiments of nostalgia. Visiting professor of Creative Writing and English Dr. Christian Moody relates his experience with comics to his childhood. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I grew up with DC comics, Marvel, and others,\u201d Dr. Moody said. \u201cMy favorite comic in elementary school and junior high was <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>The Sandman<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, which is DC. Older kids liked it, especially the angsty goth-ish kids who listened to The Cure. They were pretentious, and I wanted them to like me so I was pretentious too. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>The Sandman<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> was considered a little more literary than other comics. I tried to go back and read them a few years ago, but my taste has changed a lot. For nostalgia\u2019s sake, though, I\u2019d go see a Sandman movie. My other favorite character was Gambit, from the Xmen. He was played by the extremely handsome Taylor Kitsch from <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Friday Night Lights<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">. I\u2019d go see a Gambit movie, too.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Patterson, for one, is excited at the prospect of so many superhero movies, though he prefers Marvel to DC.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I\u2019ve always preferred mainstream Marvel characters over their DC counterparts because I related to them as a kid,\u201d Patterson said. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">His preference for Marvel carries over into the films they put out.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Current Marvel movies are more refined than those made by DC and complement one another nicely,\u201d Patterson said. \u201cI feel as though I can go into a movie by Marvel and know what I\u2019m in for. This cohesiveness between films started after Marvel bought back the film licenses to most of their characters to make <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>The Avengers<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">. I will be interested to see how DC handles their upcoming films since they are using an extremely similar approach via <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>The Justice League<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">. If they do undergo a similar transition then I could see myself enjoying their movies more than I do now, but I\u2019m not holding my breath.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Not much of comic book superhero fan herself, Dr. Peebles still has an interest in the movies. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I wonder if any of them are doing anything interesting with the concept of the superhero,\u201d Dr. Peebles said. \u201cThat\u2019s what Christopher Nolan did with <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>The Dark Knight <\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">stuff. He took familiar material with a heightened enough vision to do something different. The one with the most potential would probably be <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Wonder Woman<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> just from a feminist perspective. Will she be a strong female presence or just scantily clad and disappointing in that sense?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">A few director and casting choices have been made public regarding these movies. Henry Cavill (<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Stardust<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>The Tudors<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">) will return as Superman, and Ben Affleck (<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Argo<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Gone Girl<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">) will play Batman in <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Batman v. Superman<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">. Israeli actress Gal Gadot (<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Fast &amp; Furious<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Entourage<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">) has been cast as Wonder Woman. Ezra Miller (<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>The Perks of Being a Wallflower<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">) has been cast as The Flash. Aquaman will be played by Jason Momoa (<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Conan the Barbarian<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Game of Thrones<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">). Both the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Justice League<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> films will be directed by Zack Snyder.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Marvel\u2019s proposed lineup of actors includes Chris Evans who will continue portraying Captain America, Chris Hemsworth who will return to play Thor, and Robert Downey, Jr. who will play Iron Man. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Dr. Peebles asked, with 21 superhero films being released in the next five years, will the general public ever grow weary of movies about truth, justice, and the American way?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I wonder when\u2014at what point\u2014it will become impossible to make a straight superhero movie,\u201d Dr. Peebles said. She cited Westerns as an example. Gone are the days where classic, John Wayne-style Westerns will draw audiences into theatres. The closest modern equivalent to these are the Coen brothers\u2019 Western-thriller, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>No Country for Old Men<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2007) and the recent box office flop, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Cowboys &amp; Aliens<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2011). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Both of these offered interesting twists on the original genre.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">When genres are so big for so long, you can\u2019t make a straight movie anymore. That\u2019s when things get kind of interesting. Will [filmmakers] turn it inside out, be revisionist? Do the superheroes become bad guys? That\u2019s innovation worth seeing,\u201d Dr. Peebles said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Another controversial aspect of transcribing comic books into movies is loyalty to the original document. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Here\u2019s one idea though: when books are adapted into film, I usually want them to be good stories in their own medium, rather than overly loyal to the original,\u201d Dr. Moody said. \u201cThey need to be works of art in their own right. I doubt the movies will be works of art\u2014big budget movies often aren\u2019t\u2014but I might be pleasantly surprised.
