Nolan is the director of many successful films of the last 15 years, including <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Momento<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2000), <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>The Dark Knight <\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">trilogy (2005-2012), and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Inception<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (2010). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">His newest project <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Interstellar<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> has a star-studded cast, with Matthew McConaughey, Michael Caine, Anne Hathaway, and John Lithgow. The film looks to be another success, scoring 9\/10 on IMDb and 74 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie tells of a dying Earth and group of explorers who traverse a wormhole to find a new location for human life. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Like many Nolan movies, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Interstellar <\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">is thought-provoking. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The plot is complicated; it\u2019s a film that demands thinking. Nolan is somebody who\u2019s going to search for some ambiguity, some complication, he\u2019s going to want to make you think about it. It\u2019s not going to give an easy answer,\u201d Director of Film Studies and Assistant Professor of English Dr. Stacey Peebles said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1549\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1549\" style=\"width: 481px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.centre.edu\/cento\/files\/\/2014\/11\/Interstellar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1549\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.centre.edu\/cento\/files\/\/2014\/11\/Interstellar.jpg\" alt=\"Christopher Nolan\u2019s filmography ranges from Batman to dreams, but his newest work deals directly with exploration, education, and existence.\" width=\"481\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cento.centre.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Interstellar.jpg 481w, https:\/\/cento.centre.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Interstellar-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1549\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christopher Nolan\u2019s filmography ranges from Batman to dreams, but his newest work deals directly with exploration, education, and existence.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The movie highlights the relationship between Cooper (McConaughey) and his ten-year-old daughter Murph (Makenzie Foy). When Cooper blasts off to space, Murph is left behind.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Junior Daniel Graham was critical of the portrayal of this relationship. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The worst part of the movie was how Nolan handled the theme of love. It seemed a little forced, and out of left field. That said, it was not a major distraction or even that out of place,\u201d Graham said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">While known for his stunning visual effects, Nolan has been criticized for his treatment of human relationships in previous films. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">But even if the execution was slightly clumsy, the fact that Nolan placed this relationship at the center of such a film is admirable. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I like the dynamic of how relationships supersede everything else,\u201d first-year Max Addington said. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">When this relationship is combined with wormholes and spaceships and Matthew McConaughey, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Interstellar<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> has a lot to offer. \u201cNolan gives us human relationships and things we recognize with what promises to be some pretty weird stuff,\u201d Dr. Peebles said. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">That \u201cweird stuff,\u201d unlike in many movies, was extensively researched and relatively scientifically sound. Undoubtedly, this film is science fiction, but Nolan worked hard to keep the fiction at a minimum. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">They had an actual astrophysicist working on set helping them with the visuals for the black hole to be as realistic as possible,\u201d Graham said. \u201cIf you like science, you should see it. The fact that this movie was 90 percent scientists or science was awesome.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This silver screen manifestation of real science could be inspiring to the scientifically-minded. \u201cIt made me rethink my major, seeing how practical and essential physics is to our survival. It was really cool seeing science in action rather than out of a textbook,\u201d Addington said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In the movie, science represents the potential of the human race to save itself from itself. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">You don\u2019t really see that sentiment much. This idea of human ambition, of not trying to fix the messes we\u2019ve made for ourselves, but to really reach for something great. To me what\u2019s striking is that very sincere statement about human potential, there\u2019s a sincerity there that you don\u2019t really see too often,\u201d Dr. Peebles said. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The movie definitely makes a convincing case for what humans can do when we put our minds to it. But the message of the movie was more than that. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">It was incredibly ambitious, seeking to address relativity, our place in the universe, human nature, artificial intelligence, and the powerful bonds we form with those we love. I can\u2019t remember the last time a movie even attempted to handle as many themes of such great importance and even for that reason alone I was excited to see it,\u201d Graham said. \u201cI think Nolan was able to incorporate these elements very elegantly.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Human relationships, human potential, and deep space are all well explored in <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Interstellar<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, and there will certainly be much debate over how well the movie portrays them.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This movie, however, represents another debate in the world of cinematography, the debate between film and digital cinematography. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Until recently, celluloid film was the dominant medium for movies. Now it has been widely replaced by digital, to the point that a major movie playing on film is rare. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Nolan is a staunch advocate for film, and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Interstellar<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> is playing on film in some theaters. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Film advocates argue \u201cthat even in an age where digital technology has advanced really far, there\u2019s something about film that still captures a depth of image and color and texture that you cannot get if you\u2019re just working with digital,\u201d Dr. Peebles said. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Digital advocates maintain that the ease of use and relatively low cost of digital equipment democratizes the filmmaking process, allowing people with smaller budgets and less experience to still create high quality cinematography. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">You can work more freely, you can work more innovatively, you can see what you\u2019re shooting. You can\u2019t do that with film,\u201d Dr. Peebles said. \u201cEven though audiences won\u2019t be aware of the difference, for people in the industry, it\u2019s a big difference.\u201d Regardless of the beliefs of both sides of this argument, digital has taken over, and the future of film is uncertain at best. \u201c<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia-Italic,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Interstellar<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> could be one of the last movies that you could see on film.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: MinionPro-Regular,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">All in all, there\u2019s a lot to like about this movie. It\u2019s got space travel, science, wormholes, family bonds, various themes, and Anne Hathaway.
