Fall for Fall: Things to do this autumn

The leaves have begun to pepper the ground around campus and the weather is cooling down, and that can only mean one thing: fall, the season of Halloween, sweater weather, and pumpkin spiced lattes is here.

“Fall is my favorite season by far,” sophomore Zoe Doubles said.

“I love the colors of fall the best,” senior Maggie Kaus said, “it’s so much to just drive around and look at all of the greens, browns, oranges and reds.”

What exactly about fall makes it one of the most beloved seasons on campus?

“My favorite thing to do in the fall is sitting by the fire in the campus center,” junior Kortney Trevino said, “and getting to bundle up.”

Some people’s favorite thing to do in the fall is grabbing a cup of one of the season’s iconic drinks – warm apple cider or pumpkin spiced lattes.

“I love pumpkin spiced lattes,” sophomore Brenna Atmore said, “and I’m not ashamed to admit it. I love it when Cowan has pumpkin spiced coffee.”

Pumpkin spiced lattes seem to be a polarizing drink. Kaus expressed her distaste for the drink: “I much prefer spiced apple cider.”

While some students love being able to wrap themselves in a blanket and cuddle up with their favorite book, drink or person, others like the darker aspects of the fall.

Junior Hayley Sinnot’s favorite part of the fall is Halloween.

“I love spooky things like haunted houses, and getting lost in Devine’s corn maze,” Sinnot said. “I’m hoping to drive down to one of the haunted houses next month. And it is always fun dressing up for Halloween and seeing the variety of different characters out at night.”

However, all students in the fall seem to love taking advantage of the pleasant weather outside.

“My favorite thing to do during the fall is going on walks around town,” junior Haidar Khan said.

Though Danville is a small town, it always seems to be full of fun outdoor activities and events, from the annual BBQ festival to activities in Shaker Village, which allow Danville residents and Centre students alike to take advantage of the good weather. Millennium Park is only a thirty minute walk from campus and is a great location for students who prefer to run outside.

“I love going to Devine’s corn maze in fall,” Trevino said, referencing another place frequented by Centre students in the fall. In addition to the corn maze, Devine’s also has a petting zoo, pumpkin picking, and a nightly bonfire.

“Apple picking and pumpkin carving are so much fun to do in the fall,” Atmore said.

Another great thing about fall is that it’s the season of America’s favorite sport – football, and full of opportunities for students to show off their Centre pride.

“I love that it’s football and volleyball season,” sophomore Zoe Doubles said. “I love being able to play my favorite sport and go to football games.”

Whether it’s the sports, the drinks, or activities outside or in, fall seems to be the season that has something for everyone, and Danville and Centre seem to provide plenty of opportunities for students to do their favorite fall activities. So what are you waiting for? Grab a pumpkin spiced latte and head to the nearest pumpkin patch!
